You haven't had it good!
What is your list of food item that you will never eat? Or that item that you find disgusting when combined with others? Have you ever eaten Bacon Ice Cream, foie gras, bulls testicles, or chicken liver? What about french fries with vanilla ice cream? Do you like rotten stuff?
All pretty crazy questions, but pretty valid too. We all have or had something that we would never eat. At least until we have it good. I use to be like that. And all it takes to discover the multiverse of flavors and foods that this world has to offer is one simple but rather difficult leap of faith.
The year was 2002 and I was a very young man. (Not that I am not, but I use to have hair). I use to work at a mans clothing store as a sales rep. By the store there was a beauty salon at which one psychology student use to work. Let's call him Cesil.
Cesil loved sushi, and every day by lunch time he use to walk to a super market near by and buy a plate of sushi. One day he offerd me to try. And even with the experience that I had working as I cook, one might have think that I would be brave enough to try it. "Uy fo", was my answer, which is Puerto Rican for, "Yuck, nasty".
Now, as any other psychologist, Cesil decided to dig deep into my head to find the root of my evil. After all, how could I say no if I hadn't even try it before? It was fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of trying something new and like it. I was in my comfort zone. But again, as any other psychologist, he persisted untill I tried.
Flowers blossomed, dolphins danced, the sky turned blue, and I was in love. That little tuna roll captivated my attention. No, it captivated my soul. It took me from zero to one hundred in less than a second. Next thing I know, I am buying ingredients, educational material, and utensils to make my own sushi. And now I am here, almost 13 years later writing about it.
After that, I learned to love food more than ever. I decided that I will never say no to something that I don't know, or even to things that I tried once and didn't like at first. I love raw fish, foie gras, bulls testicles, and liver. I wanna try all the flavors in the world, and if I don't like it in the first try, I will not stop trying it until I like it.
Come on. Let's try new flavors. Let's have it good! It's food o'clock.
